Warming Herbal Cold Remedy: A Kitchen Witch’s Brew

Writer's picture: woodlarkerwoodlarker

A bit of kitchen witchery going on here today! This herbal cold remedy is packed with warming spices to help boost circulation, provide a dose of vitamin C, and act as a natural antiseptic. It also helps dry up mucus (not the most charming benefit, but a useful one!).

It tastes so good, you’ll want to enjoy it even when you’re feeling perfectly well!

How to Make It

For about two mugs’ worth, you’ll need:

  • A few inches of fresh ginger, roughly chopped

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

  • Around 8 whole cloves

  • A generous grating of fresh nutmeg

  • 5 cardamom pods, slightly crushed

  • ~7 juniper berries, slightly crushed (leave these out if pregnant)

  • 1 lemon, juiced

  • 1 orange, juiced

  • 2 teaspoons of good-quality honey (or more to taste)

Pop the ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, and juniper (if using) into a pan, cover with water, and bring to a good simmer. Let it bubble away for about 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, squeeze the lemon and orange juice into your mugs and add the honey. Strain the hot spiced mixture into the mugs, topping up with extra hot water if you prefer it more diluted. Stir, sip, and enjoy.

For a soothing bedtime version, a tot of whiskey or brandy wouldn’t go amiss 😉

Note: Juniper should not be used during pregnancy, and it's always worth checking the suitability of the other spices if unsure.
